Google was willing to outbid Facebook for WhatsApp - report.

A new piece in The Information by Amir Efrati and Jessica E. Lessin reports that Google frantically tried to prevent Facebook from buying WhatsApp, and was even willing to spend more than Facebook's offer. 

It appears, however, that WhatsApp went with Facebook because Facebook seemed excited about a future for a semi-independent WhatsApp, while Google was interested mainly in preventing Facebook from owning it.
