Dear TED Books Reader,

There are big changes ahead with the TED Books app, and it is important that we let you know what’s coming.

Here’s the headline: We’re getting ready to discontinue the TED Books app on January 31, 2016.

Why? Because our app runs on custom software provided by a company called Atavist, and Atavist has decided to phase out that software, with support fully ending during 2016. We’re proactively letting you know what to expect now to help make the transition as easy as possible when it comes.

This is what you’ll see:

1) After January 31, 2016, the TED Books app will be discontinued. New subscriptions and individual titles will no longer be sold in the lead-up to this date.

2) For any remaining time beyond January 31, 2016, on the annual subscription for current subscribers, Apple will issue partial year refunds on a pro-rata basis. Users will receive an email from Apple when the refund has been credited to a user’s account.

3) You’ll still be able to access your TED Books app subscription as normal until January 31, 2016.

4) The TED Books subscription is similar to other digital content subscription services (Scribd Books, Netflix) — once your subscription ends, the content can no longer be viewed. In this case, the books will no longer be accessible in the app after January 31, 2016, since all active subscriptions will end.

5) If you’ve purchased and downloaded individual TED Books through the app (outside of a subscription) those can be read as long as you keep the app on your device. But only if you download them now, before support ends! If you change devices or remove the TED Books app from your current device, then those books will no longer be accessible.

But don’t worry, TED Books aren’t going away! You can still get our great array of existing titles — and all the exciting new ones to come — through retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and independent booksellers. Now, you can even get collector’s-quality print editions of newly-released titles at online and brick-and-mortar bookstores.

Questions? Check out our FAQ for details about the change. Or, if you need more info, contact us. Email our support team at contact@ted.com. (Please do not reply to this email.)

And THANK YOU for being a devoted TED Books reader! We hope you’ve been inspired by the diverse ideas in our books, and that you’ll continue to enjoy the many new ones we have planned for the future.

Best wishes,

The TED Books Team
