An update on YouTube's work to fight violent extremism online

YouTube uses a combination of human flagging, machine learning and human review. Some stats:

* Over 83 percent of the videos YouTube removed for violent extremism in the last month were taken down before receiving a single human flag

* YouTube's teams have manually reviewed over a million videos to improve this flagging technology by providing large volumes of training examples.

* To reduce false positives, YouTube is working on ways to educate those who share video meant to document or expose violence on how to add necessary context. Learn more about the importance of context here:

* YouTube has added 35 NGOs to their Trusted Flagger program, which is 70 percent of the way towards their goal. These new partner NGOs represent 20 different countries.

* YouTube has put videos containing controversial religious or supremacist content behind a warning interstitial. These videos are not recommended, monetized, and don’t have key features including comments, suggested videos, and likes.

* YouTube is heavily investing in the YouTube Creators for Change program to support Creators who are using YouTube to tackle social issues and promote awareness, tolerance and empathy.

* YouTube is researching expansion for Jigsaw's Redirect Method to apply this model to new languages and search terms.
