Bruce Lee was involved in countless street fights in Hong Kong. He was sent to America to avoid being targeted by a Tong (Chinese organized crime) vendetta for beating up a Tong chieftains son in one of them.

Bruce had two witnessed fights in the States. One was the famous Wong Jack Man fight in Oakland in which Bruce beat a fighter backed by the San Francisco traditionalists. The challenge was that if Bruce lost, he would have to close his school and leave the Bay Area. The traditionalists didn't like him teaching non-Chinese Wing Chun and/or other traditional arts. There are varying accounts of the outcome, but Bruce didn't leave, and he continued to teach Westerners in Chinese Martial Arts. Wong supposedly wanted a re-match, but Bruce wouldn't oblige him as he had already won and didn't feel it necessary to arrange a re-match. The fight did cause Bruce to agonize over why it had taken him longer to beat Wong than he thought it should have. From that moment on, Bruce Lee commenced to study all forms of martial arts for the purpose of forming a synthesis that took the best from all forms. For this reason, most everyone now acknowledges that Bruce Lee was the Father of modern MMA.

The second fight that was witnessed and reported on was when Bruce beat a Karate Black Belt in one of his college classrooms. The karate man confronted Bruce and basically forced him to fight. The karate guy wanted to go to the gym, and Bruce said something to the effect of "shouldn't we fight under real conditions?". Bruce didn't change clothes, didn't change shoes, didn't ready himself in any way, while the karate guy put on his gi and his martial arts slippers. Bruce knocked him out in less than five seconds.

As for his contemporary influence among the martial arts community, Joe Lewis, credited Bruce for helping him win some of his championships. So did Chuck Norris, Mike Stone and Ron Marchini. Gene LeBell, the "Father of American Judo" said Bruce was a prodigy, an amazing athlete and the most proficient martial artist he had ever known (and Gene LeBell was a crusty old man who took no nonsense from anyone). Jhoon Rhee, the "Father of American TeoKwonDo", said that he would show Bruce a technique it had taken him YEARS to perfect, and Bruce would come back a month later and proceed to do the technique better than Jhoon Rhee himself. Jhoon Rhee taught Bruce Lee kicking techniques and Bruce that Jhoon Rhee to project power in his punches.

A third fight took place in Hong Kong and was reported by Bob Wall, a world champion in TaeKwonDo and Karate. It involved an extra who, sitting on a wall, challenged Lee to a fight. Bruce ignored him, but when the extra jumped down from the wall and got in his face. The fight was witnessed and reported on by Bob Wall. Wall said the challenger was no punk. He was bigger than Bruce, stronger and obviously trying to hurt him. Bruce toyed with him, then tied him up using Wing Chun "trapping hands", backed him into the wall, pinned him with one knee and the opposite hand, and slapped him silly, all the while explaining the shortcomings in the poor dude's technique. The challenger ended up thanking Lee for the lesson.
I personally knew a fellow named Serrano who knew Bruce Lee in his Oakland days. Mr. Serrano told me that I could take any Bruce Lee story I had ever heard, use my imagination to double or triple Bruce Lee's abilities, and I would still be far short of who he was and what he could do.

PS: I was in my prime (mid 20's) when I met and talked to Mr.Serrano, had two full contact fights in the ring (late 70's, early MMA) and knew how to handle myself. Mr. Serrano was in his early 80's, and he could have dropped me at will. I know this is true because he did it!
